The STM Japan Chapter is a forum for discussion on research publishing developments as they apply to Japan and as an outreach group to the wider research ecosystem in Japan.   

The Chapter  is composed of representatives of international and Japanese STM members based in Japan. 

STM has held a joint seminar with the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) in October every year since 2017. The seminar is principally for the societies and publishers who publish their journals on the J-STAGE journal platform, although others in the research community in Japan attend. Simultaneous translation is provided and speakers from Japan are invited by JST and from elsewhere by STM. 

The next and eighth seminar on 31 October 2024 will be on “Machine Readability in Scholarly Communications.”

JOSS is held every year in June, and has been a virtual event since the outbreak of COVID 19. Caroline Sutton was an invited speaker at one session in 2023. In 2024 in collaboration with Professor Amane Koizumi of NIID, there were two sessions where three members of STM spoke at each on their approaches to open access and in response to the National Open Science Policy commencing in 2025.
