Jo has worked in environmental sustainability for over 20yrs, joining Sage in Feb 2023 to lead the development and implementation of their global sustainability strategy and net zero roadmap.
Jo started her career at a UK government funded organisation leading large UK-wide energy efficiency and renewable projects before moving to a variety of positions, including running her own environmental consultancy and more recently at The Francis Crick and Cancer Research UK where she developed strategies and environmental programmes across energy efficiency in buildings, plastics, and events as well as management of sustainable procurement and ethical supply chain processes.
Jo is passionate about finding solutions to the challenges Climate Change presents and believes working in partnerships accelerates the development of innovative and pragmatic approaches that will help us create sustainable and ethical businesses for the future.
Dr. Ralf Schimmer is Wiley’s Senior Director of Government Partnerships and Public Policy. In this role, he works with a range of stakeholders to inform policy and direction in Wiley’s transition to open access, leads strategy workshops with partners and customers, runs thought leadership events from Wiley’s Innovation Lab in Berlin, and supports Wiley in building, expanding, and maintaining relations with government and other policymakers.
Previously, Ralf served as Director of Scientific Information at the Max Planck Digital Library, where he led the organization’s strategy for more than two decades and helped drive Germany’s leadership in open access research. He has a social science background with a Ph.D. from the Free University of Berlin.
Harp works for the Royal Society of Chemistry as a Publisher, focusing on strategy and new developments.
His work supports the long-term aims of the Publishing Directorate and wider organisation through analysis of competitor intelligence and new technology developments.
He trained as an analytical chemist with a degree in chemistry and a Masters in Analytical Chemistry & instrumentation from Loughborough University. In the past, he has launched several journals for the RSC dealing with Environmental/ Sustainable /and Green Chemistry as well as technology journals.
Dr. Wanshu Zhang is an Associate Publisher, Health Sciences at Wiley managing a portfolio of open access and hybrid titles as well as strategic publishing projects in partnership with renowned Chinese societies. Wanshu started her publishing career at Wiley in 2019 as a Journal Publishing Manager, Editorial and Society Management that focused on partner publishing business in China market. In the past five years, she launched nine open access journals and oversaw a portfolio of twenty journals with varied business models and professions such as materials science, chemistry, energy, neurology, hepatology, rheumatology, oncology, and general medicine, etc. She is closely engaged with the research communities and is an advocate of open access, pioneering STM publishing technologies, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). She organized the Emerging Editor board and increased the ratio of female editors in her journal portfolio. Before joining Wiley, she was a postdoc researcher at Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands. She conducted her Ph.D. study at Peking University based on a cooperation project with University of Science and Technology Beijing.
Gordon MacPherson joined IEEE (Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers) in 2007.
As Director, Board Governance & Policy Development, he serves as lead staff support for IEEE’s Publication Services & Products Board. His previous service at IEEE included roles as Director, Conference Quality, and Senior Program Manager, eBooks & Conference Publications.
Prior to IEEE, Gordon held editorial or production roles with Thomson Reuters, Dow Jones & Co., Reed Elsevier, and the AICPA. He holds degrees from Fordham and Monmouth Universities.
Liz joined IOP Publishing in 1995 as a Desk Editor and has worked up to her current role.
Liz is responsible for the production teams, based in the UK and the US, handling IOP Publishing’s journals, books, and conference proceedings.
As such, she is responsible for the development and implementation of sustainable, effective, and high-quality processes and procedures for production, whether in-house or outsourced, that deliver a seamless experience for authors.
Since 2020, Liz has led IOP Publishing’s efforts to operate in a sustainable way and drive towards Net Zero. Liz has a BSc (Hons) in Physics from the University of Surrey.
Martin Visbeck is head of research unit Physical Oceanography at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and professor at Kiel University, Germany. His research interests revolve around ocean’s role in the climate system, ocean circulation, upwelling systems, integrated global ocean observation, digital-twins of the ocean and the ocean dimension of sustainable development. He is deeply involved in the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and promoting sustained ocean observations and Digital Twins of the ocean.
He serves on a number of national and international advisory committees including member of the Governing Board of the International Science Council (ISC), Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), Research Board of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), leadership council of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), and past member of the Interim Decade Advisory Board for the UN Decade of Ocean Science Decade for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 and the EU ocean mission board assembly. He was elected fellow of the AGU, AMS, TOS, ISC, and the European Academy of Sciences.
Laura Hassink is Managing Director for STM Journals. In that capacity she is responsible for Elsevier’s portfolio of 2,750 journals managed by more than 30,000 editors, who collectively publish more than 600,000 research articles a year. She leads a team of over 1350 people worldwide.
Laura has a genuine passion for understanding the needs of the research communities we serve and maintaining the highest quality and integrity standards in scholarly communications. Strategic priorities this year are to work towards a more equitable publishing experience worldwide where every article that deserves to be published should be able to find a suitable journal at Elsevier. Laura and her team actively try to reduce bias and focus on equity.
Before her current role, Laura served as Senior Vice President of Publishing Transformation, overseeing all aspects of operational support for its journals, improving, and innovating the publication experience for authors, peer reviewers and editors. Laura has also been instrumental in accelerating Elsevier’s substantial progress in open access publishing, with the company now offering more than 750 gold open access journals, as well as offering open access publishing options across all its portfolios.
Prior to that role Laura served as SVP Product Management for ScienceDirect and Journal Branded Solutions, responsible for defining the strategy and product roadmap to improve customers’ reading experience and visibility of the journals Elsevier publishes.
During her 26 years with Elsevier, she also served as SVP Physical Sciences in STM Journals and held positions in Strategy, Business Development and Journal Services.
Since 2015, Laura has been active as a board member of the Dutch Publishers Association, Mediafederatie and Chair of the Media Voor Vak en Wetenschap (MVW), and currently serves as Chair of the MEVW Open Science Forum.
She holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Vrije Universiteit, and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Nyenrode Business Universiteit.
Catherine Zaller Rowland, Vice President, General Counsel, CCC, advises on a wide range of corporate activities, including copyright licensing, software, and professional services.
She has deep experience with complex intellectual property issues like the applicability of copyright to computer programs and the intersection of copyright and artificial intelligence.
Previously, she held a range of positions in the private sector and federal government, including most recently as Associate Register of Copyrights and Director of the Office of Public Information and Education at the U.S. Copyright Office. While at the U.S. Copyright Office, Rowland served as one of four principal legal advisors to the head of the Office on a variety of complex matters, chaired the board that considers second appeals of registration decisions, and co-chaired the group responsible for updating the Compendium of U.S. Copyright Office Practices.
Rowland is a frequent public speaker and has been a key contributor to trade agreement implementation negotiations. She began her legal career in private practice focusing on intellectual property litigation, transactions, and counseling.
Aaron is Head of Product and Content Management for the American Psychological Association, a role he has held since 2016.
He started his career in journals publishing at the Russian Academy of Sciences before moving to federal government and academic research library positions in Canada. Most recently, he led ebook, ecommerce, and metadata platforms and services at Ingram Content Group. Previous to that, he managed systems and data architecture at Alexander Street Press, a provider of streaming media to the academic market.
