Image Type Taxonomy for Scholarly Images (Draft)

The draft image-type taxonomy is a collaborative effort by members of the STM Association to develop a comprehensive classification system for scientific, technical, and medical images. The goal of the taxonomy is to establish a controlled vocabulary of image categories commonly used in scientific and scholarly publishing to assist publishers in providing self-serve guidance and examples to authors to assist them in writing alternative (alt) text for images they submit to books and journals. Alternative text is one method to share visual information with those using assistive technology such as screen readers.
