Who's Who at STM

Caroline Sutton is CEO for the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM). Prior to joining STM Caroline served as Director of Open Research for Taylor & Francis. She co-founded Co-Action Publishing, a pioneer in Open Access Publishing and was one of the founders and first President of OASPA where she served on the board between 2008-2021. She has served on numerous boards within the scholarly communications space including the Board of Directors of Dryad (2017-2023), and Infrastructure Services for Open Access (IS4OA), the managing organization of the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) (2013-2022). Caroline holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Uppsala, Sweden.

Kim Beadle is Director of Financial Administration and Facilities.  She takes care of handling all internal governance including the administration of the STM offices and staff regulations including human resources and IT security and infrastructure.  Kim handles the administration of the finances both receivable and payable and also coordinates the annual budget process. Membership activities include renewals, the processing of all member applications and coordinating the annual STM Board Member and Officer Elections.

Jackie Benoist joined STM in September 2022 part-time as Executive Assistant to Caroline Sutton, CEO.

In her role, Jackie supports Caroline by helping to administer and assist with the organization of key strategic projects within STM.

Before joining STM Jackie worked for almost two decades at Taylor & Francis an Informa UK business as part of the Executive team supporting the current and previous CEO.

She has had many years of publishing experience in various roles. Her publishing career began at Blackwell’s followed by 11 years at Heinemann and 3 years at Elsevier before joining Taylor & Francis.

Lucy Derges is Manager of Research and joined STM in December 2020.  She coordinates research projects that deliver data analysis, resources and reports that inform STM’s work and stakeholders in our sector. She also monitors the industry for developments and gathers research to support global advocacy work.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in International Politics, two postgraduate certificates in International Affairs and a master’s degree in Publishing.  She has previously worked as a Global Marketing Manager and spent ten years in the UK Civil Service as a Policy Analyst and Relationship Manager. 

Jo Dinnage STM General Manager Events and Sponsorship joined STM in January 2008 as Events Manager. Responsible for event sponsorship and the organisation of STM events including seminars, courses, conferences, and webinars.
Jo negotiates with venues on meeting rooms, accommodation, audiovisual requirements, catering, reviews contracts, controls budgets, and liaises with guest speakers, moderators, sponsors, and delegates throughout the duration from the briefing stage to the actual event. More recently Jo has learnt the art of the Zoom conferencing tool enabling STM events to be held virtually where necessary. Jo prepares and manages the content of the event's web pages, coordinates promotional material, and provides onsite representation. 

Leila Jones serves as STM's Chief Operating Officer — providing operational leadership and cross-functional coordination across STM. She plays a key role in driving progress on strategic programmes and ensuring the seamless execution of STM’s activities. Leila has been an integral part of STM as the Director of Strategic Programmes, where she facilitated the delivery of STM’s strategy by overseeing and coordinating projects across its core strategic pillars. With over 20 years of experience in scholarly publishing, including editorial and operational roles at Taylor & Francis, Blackwell Publishing, Elsevier, Nature Publishing Group, and Wiley, Leila brings a wealth of expertise to her new role.

Barbara Kalumenos joined STM in July 2008 as Director of Public Affairs. She holds a degree of Biology from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and has been working since 1985 in leading Sales & Marketing positions for various international companies focused on scientific information including Beilstein and Elsevier where since 2006 she was Director of External Relations for the German-speaking countries.

Hylke Koers is the Chief Information Officer for STM Solutions, STM’s operational arm which develops and manages shared infrastructures and collaborative services to support the scholarly communications community. He is responsible for the STM Integrity Hub and serves as program director for GetFTR and SeamlessAccess. Before joining STM, Hylke worked in several senior technology and product management roles, in both private and public sector organizations, supporting the research community. He has held leading roles in FAIRsFAIR, the Research Data Alliance and served on the EOSC Architecture Working Group. Hylke holds a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Amsterdam.

Donna Okubo serves as STM's Community Engagement Manager.

Donna will be working closely with a diverse range of stakeholder groups across the STM universe, including STM members, funders, allied organizations, and partners. Her charge is to enhance our community by listening, learning, and discovering new ways to collaborate and advance trusted research together. Donna brings with her over 20 years of experience in science and data publishing. Her expertise spans community and member engagement, membership program development, strategic partnerships, and fundraising.

Before joining STM, Donna was instrumental at Dryad, a research data publisher, where she laid the groundwork for their institutional membership program and collaborated with funders and researchers on their strategic initiatives. Her career also includes over 14 years at the Public Library of Science (PLOS), where she served in various roles, from Institutional Relations Manager to Senior Strategic Partnership Manager, working closely with institutional members, funders, and policymakers.

Sarah Phibbs serves as STM's Director of Equity & Inclusion, working to foster global research equity by enabling reciprocal, diverse, and rich scholarly exchange. Sarah also works as a consultant for societies and publishers focusing on sustainable publishing, strategy, and innovation. Sarah facilitated the development of Research4Life’s new Strategic Plan and Theory of Change having previously served on the Committee reviewing the Feasibility Study for Friends of Research4Life. Previously, she was Wiley’s Vice President for society research publishing across life, health, physical and social science & humanities, establishing the society acquisitions and operations teams and ran Global Social Science & Humanities Research at Blackwell. Sarah sits on the Board at Edinburgh University Press and has recently completed a Global MBA at Oxford Brookes University.   She has also volunteered with local mental health charity MIND and the ‘Big Gig’, a forum for entrepreneurs on start-up strategy.
Claudia Russo is STM's Senior Manager, Public Affairs Europe — helping advance public affairs initiatives across Europe. Since joining STM as Regional Manager, Public Affairs Europe in April 2020, Claudia has been instrumental in gathering political intelligence, crafting effective public affairs strategies, and building strong relationships with European institutions and stakeholders. Her deep expertise in digital issues — as well as a talent for translating policy into clear, actionable strategies have been vital to STM’s success in this area.
Molly Stech is STM’s General Legal Counsel. Previously, Molly worked for the U.S. Copyright Office and the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office’s copyright policy team. She has also been a consultant for WIPO and has been an adjunct professor of law at American University Washington College of Law and George Washington University Law School. She has written and published a variety of law review articles on both intellectual property and cultural property issues in American and European law journals. She is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Law in Seattle and completed a post-graduate legal fellowship in comparative copyright law at the University of Edinburgh.

Joris van Rossum is Program Director of STM Solutions.
Joris leads various programs and projects within STM Solutions, with a special focus on the STM Integrity Hub and AI.
Before joining STM, Joris worked for several leading companies and organizations across the STM publishing space, including Digital Science and Elsevier, where he initiated and led a variety of important innovations and cross-publisher initiatives within the research and publishing ecosystem.
Joris holds a master’s degree in biology and a PhD in philosophy.

 

David Weinreich, Director of Public Affairs, Americas has worked with STM to support STM's public affairs activity since 2011. In his role as Director of Public Affairs for the Americas, he provides strategic advice, messaging development, political intelligence and lobbying to help publishers communicate their positions and goals to governments throughout the Americas, with a particular focus on the US federal government.  He holds a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Memphis, and published several articles in the mathematical literature.   In a wide-ranging career, he has worked in K-12 education, academia, non-profit science policy and education organizations, and both the legislative and executive branch of the U.S. government.  His consulting firm, Weinreich Strategic Group, focuses on science, technology, innovation, and education policy.

Consultants

Mark  Robertson advises STM as an independent consultant. Based in Australia, he consults on research and educational publishing across Asia Pacific. He was previously a member of the STM Board and is an active member of the STM Japan chapter.  Formerly Executive Director for Wiley in Australia and Japan and Vice President and Director of the APAC journal publishing program, he has served as a board director of the Australian Publishers Association and Copyright Agency Ltd. In addition, Mark is the Regional Development Director for CHORUS, Vice Chair of MCERA, and a non-executive Director of Therapeutic Guidelines, and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Julia Wallace comes to STM with three decades of experience in scholarly communications. Having been a publisher in the area of physical sciences as well as a consultant, her particular interest is in multistakeholder initiatives that benefit the scholarly ecosystem.

Julia was previously Project Manager for the EU-funded PEER project (Publishing and the Ecology of European Research) and Project Director of RA21: Resource Access in the 21st Century, and has been engaged by STM as Project Manager for the Scholarly Networks Security Initiative (SNSI) since January 2021. 

Julia holds a Ph.D. in Semiconductor Physics and a postgraduate diploma in marketing.

Shuai Yan is STM China Consultant since November 2021. In his role, Shuai will support STM’s policy and advocacy work across China.

Shuai worked in the Journal Publishing Department of Beijing Forestry University from 1985 to 2011, starting as an assistant editor and working up to the director of the Department.

From 2011 to 2017 he worked with Tsinghua University Press as its director of Journal Publishing.

From 2017 to 2020 Shuai worked with Springer Nature Greater China as director of academic relationships (including government relations).

He had served as the president of the Society of China University Journals (CUJS), the vice president of China Periodicals Association (CPA), and the vice president of the China Editology Society for Scientific Periodicals (CESSP).

Shuai holds a bachelor’s degree in forestry economics and management and a Ph.D. in management.

Sameer Puri is STM's India Consultant since July 2023. Based in Delhi, India, he acts as the primary point of contact as the STM Secretariat for the India Chapter and provides support for engagement with key stakeholders in India. He coordinates closely with STM's strategic committees and coordinates additional STM initiatives, providing insights from India.

He is an entrepreneur who founded SPUR Infosolutions in 2016, a firm which provides managed support services and solutions for the publishing industry in the Indian subcontinent.

Sameer holds an engineering degree specializing in Information Technology from NMIMS University, Mumbai.
