Portland Press in collaboration with the University of Manchester’s Utopia team embarked on a project to enhance data discovery for the international scholarly publishing community.

The results of this project is Utopia Documents which powers the Semantic Biochemical Journal and with it a new dimension in scientific publishing has arrived. We have transformed electronic PDFs from a digital facsimile of its printed counterpart into a gateway to related knowledge. Together, they provide the research community with focused interactive access to analysis tools, external resources and the literature, and pave the way to an exciting new era of knowledge discovery.

AIP Publishing

AIP’s Scitation platform hosts nearly 200 seminal publications in the physical sciences. Our publishing partners benefit from Scitation’s wide range of discoverability features enabled by an XML-based MarkLogic Server, which helps to ‘unsilo’ content and make it easier for researchers to find information across the entire platform. Linked keywords, related article tabs, inline search‒all drive traffic to partner publications, increasing their visibility and their impact. To further aid discoverability, faceted search and the ability to enlarge tables and figures by clicking on them offers a highly interactive presentation that transforms the traditional scholarly article.
