Richard Balkwill graduated from Christ Church, Oxford with a degree in Spanish and French. His publishing career spanned twenty-five years, mainly in educational, academic and children’s publishing. He was publishing director of divisions at Macmillan and later Heinemann, before embarking in 1992 on an independent career offering training and copyright consultancies to publishers, and undertaking writing commissions. He has widespread international experience in devising and leading training programmes in editorial management, publishing finance, and copyright and rights.

Since 2002, he has acted as Associate Consultant at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies at Oxford Brookes University. He teaches the publishing law module to MA students at City University, and was for many years consultant to the Publishers Licensing Society. He is also an Associate Consultant of Rightscom.

Richard Balkwill is closely involved in issues relating to copyright and intellectual property protection in the publishing and digital fields, and is much in demand as a trainer and speaker.  With Professor Gill Davies, he co-authored The Professionals’ Guide to Publishing (Kogan Page, 2011) and is also the author of a dozen other books on subjects as diverse as food and feasts in ancient times and a guide and dictionary on copyright.
