IJsbrand Jan Aalbersberg

IJsbrand Jan Aalbersberg has over 25 years of experience in scholarly publishing. From 1997 till 2024 he held a variety of positions at Elsevier, most in areas where publishing, technology, and user focus intersect.

Amongst others, IJsbrand Jan worked at Elsevier’s Engineering Information division, where he led the creation of the second-generation Engineering Village platform. His next assignment placed him as one of the initiators of the Elsevier abstract and citation database Scopus, where he was responsible for its publishing-technology connection. In 2006 IJsbrand Jan became Technology Director of Elsevier’s Corporate Markets business unit and in 2009 he moved into a leadership role where he focused on enriching the scientific article on Elsevier’s full-text platform ScienceDirect, establishing Elsevier’s Article of the Future initiative. His work then expanded to include the company’s research data initiatives, and from there IJsbrand Jan became Senior Vice President of Research Integrity, where he was responsible for new technology initiatives to safeguard the integrity of both content and the content-based products that Elsevier offers. In this role he also became responsible for user privacy in Elsevier’s research products.

IJsbrand Jan was awarded a PhD in Theoretical Computer Science at the University of Leiden, after which he became research scientist at Philips Research in both The Netherlands and the USA. He has published scientific articles and holds patents in the areas of document retrieval, research data linking, and user interfaces. He has been chairperson of the STM Standards and Technology committee between 2019 and 2024, leading a variety of STM projects and initiatives, like the STM CUSAP, Image Alterations & Duplications, and EU DSM Article 4 projects, all having led to concrete publisher recommendations.
