Erica Kimmerling

Erica Kimmerling, PhD, is at the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) as the Senior Director for their Future of Science Strategies.

Most recently she was the Assistant Director for Community Driven Health at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Her health outcomes portfolio included rare diseases, cancer prevention, participatory biomedical innovation, environmental justice and environmental public health, social drivers of health, and the built environment.

In her previous OSTP role as Senior Policy Advisor for Public Engagement in Science, she increased public participation in, and developed policy across, OSTP’s portfolio, including pandemic prevention, STEM participation, and climate and the environment. In these roles she advised on issues related to science communication and engagement, the societal and ethical implications of science, public perception of science, misinformation/disinformation, and building community/civic capacity in science.

Prior to OSTP she was a Civic Science Fellow at the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC). In her role, she managed the development and activities of a network for Leaders in Science and Technology Engagement Networks (LISTEN) committed to nurturing relationships between all people and science. At the American Academy of Arts and Sciences she advanced their Public Face of Science Initiative as a Hellman Fellowship in Science and Technology Policy.

Erica was the lead drafter of the project reports Perceptions of Science in America, Encountering Science in America, and The Public Face of Science in America: Priorities for the Future. Prior to her work on science and health policy she received her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Tufts University.
