We are looking for a Regional Publisher to lead our Japan office to drive our publishing activities. The role will be key to maintaining and developing key stakeholder relationships in the region across the society to deliver our planned revenues and purpose.
This role demands an experienced team leader who has connections with a good mix of societies, universities and institutes, industry and government organisations connected to science, research & innovation in Japan. The role holder must have a good understanding of STM journals publishing. Your objectives will be to develop and maintain an exceptionally influential network of contacts within the Japanese chemical science community and manage this network to increase the awareness and impact of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s publishing activities. This role will also work closely with our sales and marketing colleagues to help increase the sales penetration and usage of our products in Japan.
This position is located at our office in Tokyo, Japan, with national and international travel for conference attendance, site visits and meetings.
Previous work experience could include:
- Scientific research (for government, academic or corporate organisations)
- Senior scientific society officer/leader/manager
- Academia at Assistant Professor or Professor level
- STEM publishing (for example as a senior (managing)editor, general manager, country manager, senior community engagement officer)
We are looking for:
ESSENTIAL SKILLS and QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-graduate level education essential, preferably in the physical sciences (ideally with a PhD or equivalent postgraduate qualification)
- Proven commercial leader with P+L / budget experience, financially literate and demonstrable experience in managing operations in an international environment
- A strong and enabling leadership style, able to articulate a clear vision for the Royal Society of Chemistry. A perceptive and supportive team leader, empowering and motivating staff to perform
- Experience in or knowledge of STM publishing
- Thorough understanding of the Japanese education system and research system
- Knowledge of international science, innovation, research and funding structures
- Established networks within the research community in Japan with Japan government bodies connected to science, research & innovation
- Fluent in Japanese and English, both written and spoken
