GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Peer Review Director is responsible for CSP’s peer review program ensuring we deliver positive author experience and timely, rigorous peer review that instills trust in the science we publish; and setting strategy to continuously improve and scale the program’s success. The Peer Review Director manages two (2) Peer Review Managers and a team of eight (8)Peer Review Coordinators. Initially, this role reports to the CEO though in time will report to the Senior Director, Editorial.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:1. Managing Peer Review Managers (2) and Peer Review Coordinators (8) who are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the peer review process for our journals, the Peer Review Director is responsible for a) Empowering people to do their best work and driving continuous improvement by ensuring that they understand CSP policies, goals, and values; and by building engagement, skills, and teamwork. b) Managing people’s performance and workloads to effectively meet operational requirements. c) Providing training as needed and regular constructive feedback; identifies high potential candidates and contributes to staff development plans andopportunities.2. Ensuring CSP’s peer review program delivers positive author experience and timely, rigorous peer review by. a. Using a data-driven approach to establish peer-review standards and performance targets for CSP journals. b. Leading initiatives to continuously improve the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of peer review (e.g., developing a preprint integration strategy and piloting new peer review models).c. Designing and delivering on reviewer recruitment, engagement, recognition, and incentivization programs. 3. Leads the development of guidelines and policies for authors, reviewers, editors so that they understand and are able to fulfill their roles in our peer review process. 4. Sets strategic direction for CSP’s peer review program to ensure its continued quality, adaptability, and scalability.5. Collaborating extensively with Editors, colleagues, and other stakeholders a. Working with Editors and editorial boards to refine current peer review models, processes, and workflows and pilot new ones b. Working with the Director, Integrity and Engagement, to develop and implement peer review processes and efficiencies, especially those tied to editorial engagement and performance and to maintaining industry best practices with respect to ethics and integrity c. Work closely with editorial, marketing, and other colleagues to communicate and promote new policies and procedures and to support editorial and marketing initiatives as required. 6. Maintains professional memberships and involvement in order to stay abreast of current practice; this includes serving as CSP’s representative for the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). 7. Monitors trends related to issues in peer review, peer review models, and best practices. 8. Monitoring new and existing peer review platforms, tools, and products and making recommendations for CSP peer review product and service enhancements. 9. Develops, analyzes, pilots, and implements new peer review policies, processes, and tools to advance the quality of CSP’s peer review program while addressing emerging issues in the scientific community.
QUALIFICATIONS
Requirements
- Honours Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering OR a Bachelor degree and significant experience in scholarly publishing, OR equivalent. A post-graduate degree would be an asset.
- 7-10 years’ experience in scientific peer review and journal publishing.
- 5+ years’ experience managing teams and developing direct reports; experience managing a remote workforce would be an asset. Skills
- As CSP’s domain expert in peer review, possesses a keen understanding of scholarly publishing and peer review.
