The STM Annual Conference in Frankfurt is SOLD OUT.
But don't worry — there's another great event lining up right behind this one. Join us for STM Week in London 5-7 December — zeroing in on AI innovations, research integrity and social responsibility.
The STM Annual Conference in Frankfurt returns 16 - 17 October, 2023 with a vibrant mix of interactive sessions, expert panelists, idea-sharing and — perhaps most importantly — connection.
At OPEN/SHIFT, we will rethink the ways we work to advance open, trusted research at scale — how we can expand access to peer-reviewed research to improve global visibility and impact. How we can shift our thinking, together, to reimagine new systems, models and solutions that promote research integrity. How we can support the global impact of science as a diverse community of academic publishers, innovators, societies, funders and universities connected by a common goal.
What to expect? First, a welcoming dinner on the evening of Monday 16 October affords us a chance to connect in person and network. Tuesday 17 October will offer a potent line-up of speakers, sessions, and ample opportunities for collaboration and connections.
What's in store? Browse the program and register to join us!
Individual spaces are available for purchase with your conference registration or separately if you are unable to attend the conference. Arrival drinks sponsored by MDPI will be served from 19:00 and we will be seated for dinner by 20:00.

What is the real impact of science in a changing society? Technology, media and trust in scholarly communication Moderated by: Rachel Martin, Global Director Sustainability, Elsevier and Chair of the STM Social Responsibility Committee Prof. Dr. Martin Visbeck, Head of the Research Unit, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, University of Kiel, Germany Science is an integral component needed to solve the ever-increasing challenges facing modern society. Yet coupled with the ever-faster digitalization and technology, communication of science is under pressure. In the face of climate change, rising inequalities, and global pandemics, the very essence of how science serves society is being challenged and its respective “impact” questioned. This facilitated discussion will explore the interplay between science, society, and politics and why we might need to rethink the disciplinary silos, and established communication channels engrained in science. Ultimately helping to answer the question: how can STM members help science make more of an impact? Topic covered:

How to maintain integrity in a fast-changing, increasingly pressurized world The continuing evolution of AI and other emerging technologies, continued pressure on researchers to publish, and the transition to open access are all placing increased pressures on a system designed for simpler times. A global panel will consider these pressures and provide insights on these issues and what we can collectively do to incentivise good publishing and research practice in a rapidly changing research environment. Dr. Anna Abalkina, Institute for East European Studies, Freie Universität Berlin Prof. Liying Yang, Director of Department for Scientometrics and Research Evaluation, National Science Library, CAS. Achieving open, visible, and impactful research at scale. Where have we got to and what’s next? STM is committed to working with its members and the community to advance open research at scale. Current models of open access have proved instrumental in expanding access to peer-reviewed research, as illustrated by the STM OA dashboard, with the upward trend in access expected to continue. But can greater access alone realise the potential of open access to improve global visibility and impact for research? Do the current models for open-access publishing deliver the widest reach of research whilst transitioning an increasing proportion of research to OA? Our international panel will share their perspectives on the progress made to date in enabling researchers to achieve open, visible, and impactful research at scale, and how current and emerging publishing models are supporting this. They will also consider how models for open publishing may need to adapt or evolve to maintain positive momentum into the future. Shared Infrastructure for Scholarly Publishing This year, Ithaka S+R is conducting a study about successes, needs, and gaps in the publishing community’s shared infrastructure. The project, which is supported by STM Solutions, will result in a white paper to be published later this month. This session will provide the first opportunity for the STM community to hear about and discuss its findings and recommendations. Roger Schonfeld, who will speak for the Ithaka S+R project team, will present some of the key recommendations and join a small panel to help launch the discussion. Panel discussion: Hylke Koers, Chief Information Officer, STM Solutions Lauren Kane, CEO, BioOne Jean-Claude Burgelman, Professor & Academic Coordinator Open Science, Free University of Brussels |
