Journals Manager, Peer Review and Ethics

The Royal Society of Chemistry has an exciting opportunity to join our Publishing team working as our Journals Manager, Peer Review and Ethic on a full time (35- hour week) permanent basis.

At the RSC we embrace flexibility and offer hybrid working, which means our teams come together when they need to collaborate.

Although this role is contractually based at our Cambridge office, you will be able to work from home within the UK, with the expectation that you will attend the office as needed for your role.

The role:

As the Journals Manager, Peer Review and Ethics, you will be joining an essential part of our publishing team, both leading the RSC’s journal peer review strategy and its commitment to ethical publishing practices. You will also be the Journals Department lead for inclusion and diversity, working closely with the RSC’s inclusion and diversity team.

The role holder will be a member of the senior management team in the Journals Department, reporting into the Head of Journals, and will lead a team consisting of a Publishing Ethics Specialist and Publishing Ethics Executives.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Significant STM publishing experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of journals peer review processes and policies, procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of publishing ethics.
  • Physical or life science degree or higher, ideally in chemistry.
  • Good knowledge of budgets, management accounts, and cost management.
  • Demonstrable broad range of functional knowledge and awareness of external influences particularly with respect to STM journals publishing
  • Broad knowledge of developments in digital publishing as it relates to peer review and/or publication ethics
  • Sound business acumen, strong ability to influence at a senior level and demonstrable negotiation skills
  • Proven ability to work well as part of a team. Good team player but self-motivated and able to work independently.
