Don Hamparian is Senior Product Manager of Platforms at OCLC, a global library cooperative that provides shared technology services, original research and community programs for its membership and the library community at large.
At OCLC, Mr. Hamparian is responsible for product strategy and direction for products and software which protect and provide access to OCLC’s services.
With a degree in Industrial Engineering from The Ohio State University and several years in the technology field, he joined OCLC in 2000 in systems administration and architecture. In 2006 he joined the Product Management team to lead efforts in platform and shared application services.
Taunton Paine is the Director of the Scientific Data Sharing Policy Division in the Office of Science Policy in the Office of the NIH Director.
Taunton has been with the Office of Science Policy since 2011. His division is responsible for issues relating to data sharing policy, including issuance of the recent NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy, oversight of the NIH Genomic Data Sharing Policy, and management of the Data Science Policy Council.
Previously, he led the Clinical Research Policy team as a senior policy analyst and advised on matters related to the Common Rule, Certificates of Confidentiality, HIPAA, and other privacy and human participant protections issues.
Before that, he worked on issues relating to dual-use research. He holds a dual master’s degree from Columbia University and London School of Economics and Political Science, where he studied science and technology in the history of international relations.
Rachel Martin is a communications expert working in a small team managing the external relations related to the wider publishing and information industry. Since joining Elsevier in 2010, she has held various marketing and communications positions with a focus on policy and advocacy. Additionally, she has worked as a strategic communication advisor on industry initiatives such as CHORUS, CLOCKKS and the Accessible Books Consortium. She then went onto become the Chief of Staff to Michiel Kolman during his two-year International Publishers Association (IPA) Presidency.
Rachel is also part of the team that launched the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals children’s book club and also served as a communication advisor on the IPA’s Education Publishers Forum’s positioning and targeted communications campaign explaining the role and purpose of educational publishing. Currently, she is focused on the SDG Publishers Compact and is spearheading Elsevier’s sustainability and climate initiatives within Elsevier.
Lucy Derges is Manager of Research and joined STM in December 2020. She coordinates research projects that deliver data analysis, resources and reports that inform STM’s work and stakeholders in our sector. She also monitors the industry for developments and gathers research to support global advocacy work. She holds a bachelor’s degree in International Politics, two postgraduate certificates in International Affairs and a master’s degree in Publishing. She has previously worked as a Global Marketing Manager and spent ten years in the UK Civil Service as a Policy Analyst and Relationship Manager.
Sybille is Director of Open Science Strategy & Licensing at ACS Publications.
Sybille’s task is to strategically position ACS with regard to Open Science and to convey this internally as well as externally.
She supports her colleagues at ACS in working with institutions, consortia and funders on new transformative models and expanding the necessary infrastructure. Her many years of experience in the industry help her.
Sybille has worked for organizations such as the Royal Society of Chemistry, SilverPlatter, Walter de Gruyter, Thomson Reuters and WoltersKluwer.
Caren is responsible for directing Jisc’s negotiations and licensing activities to deliver value for UK universities and further education institutions.
Having joined Jisc in 2002 Caren brings a wealth of experience in the successful negotiation and procurement of digital content, and an in-depth understanding of scholarly communications and the sector.
At the start of her career at Jisc, she negotiated a range of agreements and developed new content with partners including the first iteration of Hairdressing Training – a resource that is now embedded in many colleges across the UK. As head of research, Caren focused on gathering intelligence and evidence to drive the development of new licensing strategy and to support negotiations in the area of e-textbooks, open access monographs and journals.
In her most recent role as deputy director of member licensing, Caren established the research unit which has been integral in ensuring negotiations for journals agreements are driven by data and the outcomes, especially of open access agreements, are monitored and evaluated.
Máté is the community manager of preLights, the preprint highlighting service which was launched by The Company of Biologists earlier this year.
preLights has a dedicated team of scientists from the community who regularly select, highlight and comment on preprints that they feel are of interest to the biological community.
Máté studied for his PhD at The Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, focussing on gene regulation at the The Vastenhouw Lab.
Navid is a senior director of product management for Research Products and leads the team responsible for managing the Submission & Editorial Platform for authors, reviewers and editors of Elsevier Journals.
He joined Elsevier in October 2016 having had 18 years of software development and product management experience across technology, online and financial services businesses.
Navid has an honours BSc. Computer Science integrated degree from the University of Portsmouth sponsored by IBM UK.
Narendra Kumar (CTO @ MPS) has around 28 years of experience in the Pre-Press industry with specific focus on technology & platforms.
He has held a variety of leadership roles in Technology, Platforms development, Operations, IT infrastructure, Product Management and Engineering.
An expert in pre-press and electronic publishing technologies, his rich experience in this domain was been instrumental for the development of various tools, workflows and services.
