Trump again proposes deep cuts to science agencies, adds publishing

The Trump administration has proposed significant cuts to many science agencies in its budget request for fiscal year 2027. Details on the proposals can be found in AIP’s FYI newsletter and the AAAS Budget Analysis. Note that Congress often ignores the details of a budget request, as they did with last year’s similar proposed cuts.

The budget request also contains a proposal for a “Government-Wide Prohibition on Publishing and Subscription Fees”  that attacks “expensive subscriptions to academic journals and prohibitively high publishing costs.” The provision appears on p. 17 of the FY 2027 Budget proposal.

This is a significant provision, particularly given that limited space in a relatively brief budget document is given to it. However, Congress will ultimately decide whether the provision is included in legislation. STM will continue to monitor developments and engage on issues affecting publishing.
