STM prepares comments for AI and copyright consultations in the Asia-Pacific region
Following other governments, the National Copyright Administration in China and the Intellectual Copyright Office in Malaysia have opened consultations on the topics of AI and copyright. China’s draft regulations avoid proposing any new exception, and STM’s response supports this choice. The Malaysian government is more open to the idea, although a concrete proposal hasn’t been formulated yet. In our submission, we are pushing back on the need for any change to the current copyright regime to facilitate AI innovation. We also made similar arguments in a submission to the Indonesian government. The government of Hong Kong recently considered similar questions and decided not to intervene at the moment, so we’re highlighting that as a positive precedent. The Taiwanese Intellectual Property Office also seems to favour voluntary licensing agreements to a new exception.
