STM joins coalition of EU rightsholders to reject third draft of GPAI Code of Practice
STM has joined a coalition of authors, performers, publishers, and other rightsholders across Europe to raise significant concerns about the third draft of the EU AI Act’s GPAI Code of Practice.
The current draft fails to meet the objectives of the AI Act and contravenes established EU copyright law. Rather than creating a strong foundation for lawful and transparent AI development, the Code weakens the tools rightsholders need to protect their work—and undermines the essential trust upon which research and innovation rely.
As the global trade association for academic and professional publishers, STM remains committed to responsible, transparent, and collaborative approaches to AI regulation. The coalition urges the Chairs, Vice-Chairs and the AI Office to revise the Code substantially. As the joint statement makes clear: no Code is better than a broken one.
