Pat Hannah

Pat Hannah completed a PhD in Plant Biochemistry before joining CSIRO Publishing in 2023. Since transitioning into scholarly publishing, he has developed a strong interest in projects that place research communities at the centre of the publishing process, work that directly supports STM’s mission of building a more inclusive research and publishing ecosystem. His focus on creating culturally safe, meaningful engagement opportunities for Australian Indigenous scholars helps ensure research reaches, and is shaped by, a range of communities. He has also strengthened relationships between journals and academic societies, helping CSIRO Publishing better understand and respond to the needs of the researchers they serve.

This author-focused approach has built trusted relationships between CSIRO Publishing and its research partners, fostering the kind of communication and expectation-setting that underpins a healthy publishing landscape, benefiting the wider community by strengthening trust between authors and publishers more broadly.

Drawing on his experience as an academic, Pat identified a gap between researchers’ understanding of publishing and publishers’ expectations, and regularly delivers workshops for conference attendees, research groups and editorial boards on scholarly publishing and research communication. This work advances industry-wide goals around transparency and research integrity, ensuring ECRs can make informed publishing decisions and recognise potential sources of bias, outcomes that benefit publishers and researchers alike.

Grounded in community engagement, Pat brings a relationship-driven approach that helps ensure publishing remains accessible and supportive for researchers at all career stages, values central to STM’s collective mission.
