Matt Spick

Dr. Matt Spick is a lecturer at the University of Surrey, UK, where he also earned his Ph.D. which applied analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry to biomarker identification. Following a 23-year career in investment banking assessing corporate incentives and performance, his research focus has shifted to research integrity and metascience. He specifically investigates how Generative AI enables the mass production of scientific output through the exploitation of Open Science, driven by both bad actors and systemic institutional and individual incentive structures.

Matt is a grant holder across two funded programmes of work from the UK Metascience Unit, covering data integrity and shifts in the mix of scientific output in the GenAI era. He is also a member of the United2Act working group on paper mills, as well as the Lancet-WCRIF Commission on Research Integrity.
