Laura Hassink
Laura Hassink is Managing Director Journals at Elsevier, overseeing a portfolio of more than 3,000 journals, collectively publishing more than 800,000 research articles annually. She leads a team of over 1,600 people worldwide.
Laura has been instrumental in accelerating Elsevier’s substantial progress in open access publishing, with the company now offering more than 900 gold open access journals and open access options across all its portfolios.
A central focus of Laura’s work is continually improving the experience of authors, peer reviewers and editors — including through the responsible adoption of new technologies such as AI, always with human oversight. She is equally passionate about upholding the highest standards of research integrity and publication ethics, which she views as fundamental to maintaining trust in scholarly communications.
During her nearly 30 years with Elsevier, Laura has held senior roles in Strategy, Product Management, Business Development and Publishing.
Laura joined the Board of the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers (STM) in 2023. Since 2017, she has also been active in the Dutch Publishers Association.
Laura holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Nyenrode Business Universiteit.
