11:15 EST, 16:15 BST, 17:15 CET In pursuit of Scale Moderated by David Crotty, Senior Consultant, Clarke & Esposito The last few years have been a time of rapid change for society publishers. Between the global shift toward open access and the pandemic, we are living through an unprecedented period of uncertainty. One strategy many societies have implemented is to find the scale necessary to weather these changes by partnering with a larger publishing house. This session presents two societies who have made that shift, talking about the decision to partner, the process of forming a partnership, and the end results, both the benefits and the tradeoffs. Tracey DePellegrin, Executive Director, Genetics Society of America (GSA) Angela Cochran, Associate Publisher and Journals Director, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCO) |

Funders, institutions and publishers are increasingly mandating or encouraging various open practices from data management and availability, to Open Methods and Citations. This session will showcase some of the initiatives that society publishers are involved with and aims to help publishers understand how to prepare for the next frontier of open research. Open Data Policies, Shelley Stall, Director, Data Programs, AGU Open Methods, Marcel LaFlamme, Open Research Manager, PLOS PLOS publishes a number of article types by which methods can be openly shared at different points in the research process, all of which deliver the benefits of peer review and formal recognition of methods development work. This presentation provides an overview of these products, which include Registered Report Protocols, Study Protocols, and Lab Protocols, an innovative article type developed in partnership with the methods sharing platform protocols.io. It also offers an early look at survey research currently in progress, which aims to enhance and expand PLOS’s methods offerings by establishing under what conditions and through what channels researchers across fields engage in open methods sharing. |
