National open-access policy for Australia – STM Members only

Cathy Foley, Australia’s Chief Scientist to address STM members

We’re delighted to host Dr. Cathy Foley for an hour-long session to present her thoughts on a national open-access policy for Australia. Following a presentation by Dr Foley, there will be a moderated discussion and Q&A session.

Context
In 2021, Dr Foley released some ideas on the development of a national open-access policy for Australia inviting submissions from the wider research community. STM, in partnership with the Australian Publishers Association, submitted — as did many STM members individually. A consultative committee was formed, on which Dr Foley invited publishers, librarians, research administrators, and other key representatives to join as members. Whilst promulgating the potential value of a coordinated approach to develop such a strategy, she was supportive of the inclusion of all those involved in the value chain, including the value of publishers’ contribution and involvement.

Where we are now
After a general election and a new government with a significant legislative agenda, the open access plans were delayed. In April 2024, the ideas were raised again with the publication of a report from the think tank, The Australia Institute, and the research community and media have become engaged again in the discussion of the broad ideas, which raised questions and the interest of publishers globally.

We are looking forward to an engaging and interesting webinar.
