STM submission to NIH RFI | measuring and rewarding scientific impact

In August 2026, STM submitted comments to NIH’s RFI on measuring and rewarding scientific impact, urging the agency to take a broad, evidence-based approach that recognizes the systems needed to make research reliable, discoverable, reusable, and trustworthy. STM emphasized that publication and trusted scholarly communication are essential to NIH’s goals for rigor, reproducibility, responsible data sharing, public access, and public impact. The submission also highlighted the role of publishers in peer review, research integrity, metadata, preservation, data linking, corrections and retractions, and stewardship of the Version of Record.
