Maria Kowalczuk

Maria Kowalczuk is Research Integrity Auditor Manager at Frontiers. The Research Integrity Auditing team investigates large-scale cases of publication manipulation and develops processes and editorial policies to ensure that only high-quality, trustworthy research gets published. She brings over 20 years of experience in scholarly publishing, 15 of them in dedicated research integrity roles. Before joining Frontiers in 2021, Maria spent over a decade at BMC and Springer Nature where she managed a team of Research Integrity Advisers working across more than 2,500 journals and book programs.

Maria represents Frontiers in cross-publisher initiatives such as the STM Integrity Hub and regularly presents at conferences and industry events. From 2015 to 2020, she served as founding co-Editor-in-Chief of Research Integrity and Peer Review, helping to shape scholarly debate on peer review and publication ethics.

Maria holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Wroclaw, Poland, where she worked as a Research Associate and co-authored over 30 scientific publications in genomics and bioinformatics.
