Crossref launches new data citation API endpoint in beta

STM has long championed data citation and the sharing of research data underlying articles and monographs — work that sits at the heart of transparent, reproducible science.

So it’s welcome news that Crossref has expanded its support in this area with a new dedicated data citation API endpoint, now available in beta. It contains over 700,000 data citations and is continually updated using reference and relationship metadata deposited by Crossref members.

Crossref is inviting the community to test the service and share feedback — including suggestions for additional features or metadata. Feedback is being reviewed on a rolling basis until September 2026, when Crossref will decide whether to move the endpoint to full production.
