A FUTURECAST: STM TRENDS 2028

Take a look at a future in which AI has become an essential part of the fabric of research and scholarly publishing. We see a blended workforce with humans and machines working together to advance trusted research, building a vast network of knowledge that links articles to research data, experiments to code, authors to institutes and funders, and scholarly works to podcasts. Content is produced and consumed by both humans and machines, traditional peer-review is supplemented by automated checks, and trust is a quality that flows between nodes in the scholarly network.

ETHICAL & PRACTICAL GUIDELINES FOR GenAI

The use of GenAI has potentially broad implications for copyright, privacy, confidentiality and ethics in the scholarly publishing cycle. To foster a culture of responsible and ethical use of GenAI tools, all these implications must be carefully considered by all the stakeholders involved: authors, editors/editorial teams, reviewers, and vendors). To this end, STM has recently published a paper titled ‘STM’s Ethical and Practical Guidelines for the Use of Generative AI in the Publication Process’ that offers actionable guidelines and resources customised for each stakeholder group.

AI ETHICS IN SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION

Although AI is still an emerging technology, many publishers are already productively employing AI and contributing to its development in many ways. For its promise to be fulfilled and truly improve research, science, technology, medicine and broader society, AI has to be grounded in the values of trust and integrity fundamental to scholarly communication. This White Paper brings together the current thinking on how STM publishers contribute to the ethical and trustworthy development, deployment, and application of AI. The paper is not intended to be exhaustive; rather it aspires to contribute to the ongoing discussion on how to move forward with this technology.

INITIATIVE TO STOP PAPER MILLS

In 2022, STM and Committee for Publication Ethics (COPE) combined efforts to better understand — then collectively tackle — the issue of paper mills. Convening 40 cross-sector participants from 15 counties, a summit was held which paved the way for a robust two year program — now well under way. This is United2Act.

This project brings together international stakeholders to implement comprehensive strategies aimed at raising awareness, enhancing post-publication corrections, facilitating targeted research, and developing reliable verification tools. By promoting education, improving communication, and fostering dialogue among researchers, journal editors, reviewers, and publishers, United2Act strives to uphold the integrity of scholarly publishing. Organizations and individuals endorsing this initiative demonstrate their commitment to collective action and readiness to respond swiftly to challenges, ensuring trust and credibility in academic research
