Karen Butter

Karen Butter has worked at the University of California, San Francisco since 1992 and as University Librarian since 2000.

At UCSF she has lead the transformation to the digital library.  In 1994 she was part of Red Sage, a pilot project to test online journals.    She lead the creation of a digital library of more than 50 million pages of tobacco industry documents and partnered with UCSF faculty and UC Press to test the economic impact of a freely available online book.    She has served as chair of UC University Librarians and now leads the implementation World Cat Local as the libraries online catalog.

She chairs  the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries Scholarly Communication Committee.
