David Bousfield

David Bousfield currently works for Outsell, Inc, a research and advisory firm focused on the publishing and information industries.  In his position of Vice President and Lead Analyst he is responsible for analysis and advisory services centered on the scientific, technical and medical information sector, including journal, book and database publishing, relevant areas of informatics such as text mining, semantic web, social media tools, and specialized workflow applications such as clinical decision support and analytics. He also reports on industry financial performance and associated benchmarks.

 

Prior to this, Bousfield worked for Elsevier.  Starting as Editor of Trends in Neurosciences in 1979, he held a series of publishing positions in Cambridge, Oxford, London and New York.  He was responsible for launching Elsevier's first online journal,Immunology Today (with OCLC), was part of the team that developed Science Online (later to become ScienceDirect) and ran BioMedNet, the first biomedical web community.  His final role at Elsevier was Director of Business Development, Life Sciences.

 

He left Elsevier in 2005 to work on a series of projects, which included working for a year at the National Center for Biotechnology Information in Bethesda, MD, as Systems Analyst, responsible for developing tools to measure end user behaviour in the PubMed and Entrez databases.  He also spent a similar amount of time developing strategies to improve life science and medical publishing success rates at a number of Universities in Brazil, joining Outsell in 2009.

 

Bousfield has a degree in physics and a PhD in neuroscience, both from London University.
