Science, trust and truth: how to weed out misinformation and fake science online
Co-organised with MEP Dragos Tudorache
In the “post-truth” era, the public is increasingly turning to alternative and unverified sources ripe with distorted information – part of a trend of decreasing trust in governments, traditional media, and science. The real-life implications of this were demonstrated by the amount of disinformation spreading during the COVID-19 outbreak – which the World Health Organisation declared an “infodemic”. Maintaining the reliability of science communication is paramount, and evidence-based research should inform public policy and government decisions and can be a key tool to counter fake news and fake science.
Academic and scientific publishers play a key role in verifying research, transforming it into high-quality outcomes, and enabling its circulation. In this webinar, representatives from the publishing industry will discuss the threats to scientific integrity, their experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, and what makes a reputable source of scientific information.
